“Street Photography - Practical Techniques"

An Immersive 2-day San Francisco Workshop (March 14th & 15th, 2015)

I am excited to offer this unique Street Photography – Practical Techniques workshop in one of the greatest street photographic cities in the world - San Francisco, CA. 

(March 14th & 15th 2015)

More and more people are rediscovering film, and street photography has become the most popular form of photography. This workshop will focus on the fundamental techniques you will need to capture stunning images. 

In this informative and comprehensive 2 day, weekend workshop, you will learn:

  • The fundamentals of street photography from a photojournalist’s perspective. 
  • How to maximize your “keeper ratio" while shooting minimal frames. 
  • Using composition and light to create a visually compelling image.
  • To wait for that crucial moment that will make your photo unforgettable
  • The importance of blending into the environment.
  • How to overcome any initial uncertainties you might have in shooting on the streets
  • Practical tips & techniques to help you become a better photographer

This workshop is ideal for beginner or intermediate street photographers.

Workshop outline –

You are going to take your street photography to the next level. This workshop will be an intimate experience, with 8 students or less, in which you will learn practical techniques. It will entail maximum shooting time on the street with side-by-side coaching and honest and constructive criticism on how to improve your photos.

In this 2 day workshop, we will start with a discussion about basic philosophies and styles of street photography and how to implement various tips and techniques for shooting. We will emphasize technical aspects of shooting digital. Knowing your camera and your eye are key to shooting compelling images. 

Be "patient", be "deliberate" and be "yourself" is my mantra.  The main focus is to get you out making images. It's all about being out on the streets, i.e. - San Francisco, utilizing as much time and the best light of the day for you to hone your skills.

Upon returning to the studio, we will have a discussion and review of the days events over a pizza dinner before making the final edits.

This workshop is geared to help you better your technique and refine your style.

 

March 14th & 15th 2015 (Saturday & Sunday) - 11am to 7pm

 
 

Location:

  • Meet-up at Emulsion Works Studio, 1319 61st Street Emeryville, CA 94608
  • Field portion will be held in Oakland & San Francisco.
  • Workshop participants will be shuttled to Mac Arthur BART station and travel to San Francisco via BART. We will commence shooting portion of the workshop from Mac Arthur BART station until we return to the studio.

 

What to bring -

  1. Flash drive or computer with your previous images or portfolio for critique and review.
  2. Digital or film camera, preferably with a medium wide 28mm to normal 50mm lens • If you decide to shoot film, B/W (ONLY) film processing will be available for 35mm and 120 for nominal fee ($10 per roll-done in house) - processing will be done over night and editing and select scanning will be done before the second day.
  3. Laptop • for your own editing. (for the critique, all images will be down loaded in a central computer and minor post processing will be done just for critiquing purpose only)
  4. Clothing • casual attire and comfortable walking shoes, your day will be spent on your feet. Be prepared...it's San Francisco. *Always check weather reports before heading out

 

FAQ's -

Q: Are there any pre-requisites for attending this course?

A: No...this workshop will be best suited for the beginner and intermediate street photographers wanting to expand their skills and have a general understanding how to use and operate their camera.

Q: What if I need to leave early one of the days / show up late?

A: That will be okay, but please let us know in advance so we could accommodate to your schedule.

Q: What if I cannot attend one of the days, but wish to attend the workshop anyways?

A: You still will be able to attend the workshop and we can adding you to a future workshop that best fit your schedule.
